This Monk's aida cloth is ideal for afghans, placemats and a favorite for Swedish weaving. Made of a soft basket-weave fabric of 100-percent cotton material. Care instructions are hand wash, dry flat, do not bleach, iron low and do not dry clean. Made in USA. Comes in 7-count. Available in natural color. Measures 2-1/2-yard length by 60-inch width.
This cloth is, I'm guessing, the weave, about twice as big. Which makes weaving much easier. Will have to adjust the pattern. Before purchasing this cloth, I did my homework - and am very glad that I did!!!Monk's cloth shrinks - a LOT - and you do have to "prep" the fabric with either a straight or zigzag stitch the cut edges prior to washing. Although it is a very open and loose weave, I've not found it to have any more (or less) flaws than other fabric.Within the space of three weeks, I have woven a table runner and three pillow tops.........and my next project will most likely be a baby afghan. This fabric works up SOOOO fast, and (depending on the pattern chosen) is quite easy - particularly if you are acquainted with counted cross-stitch.As for the quality: I did a side-by-side comparison of this DMC and monk's cloth carried on-the-bolt at JoAnn's. HUGE difference in quality!!! It's cheaper, and the reason is very obvious: It's terrible, TERRIBLE fabric!!One final note (and the reason for 4-stars): This exact item is MUCH cheaper at Jo-Ann's.......................I bought this fabric to make a lap robe. As required with Monk's Cloth, I washed it (pre-shrinking) before stitching. I was disappointed to see the final width was, selvedge to selvedge, only 44 inches. This is a loss of 16 inches; that's a lot. My only other conclusion was that it wasn't a full 60 inches to start. Unfortunately, I didn't measure it first.I used a worsted weight yarn, as specified in the pattern I used, but it was a bit too heavy and some stitches show through. The yarn was rated at 16 stitches per inch; 18 or 20 stitches would have been better.Aside from this, the fabric is very nice; soft and cushy. It will make a comfy lap robe. I'm going to try to add a photo.Arrived in time and the cloth is exactly as expected. Great to use for huckweaving projects!Very fast shipping and it was free with my Prime...yay :) What I like about DMC is its much softer and the fabric grain is straight so there is no waste or hassle squaring it up. When preshrinking it worked better with no agitation or on the gentle cycle to prevent fuzz and pills that make me crazy or cause the fabric to lose its shape. Joann Fabric also carries the packaged monk cloth for $30 which was a little more than I paid Amazon. I did buy it cut from the bolt for less but the bolt fabric had a tighter weave, was a bit stiff and the grain wasn't straight so there was quite a bit of waste. This product has a nice quality to it however I bought it because I read other reviews that it was good for punch needle. This fabric has seven threads per inch (7 count), which is too loose for punch needle, even with bulky yarn. I’m not an expert on punch needle yet so I might be wrong, but for a beginner like me I think it’s helpful to start with the tighter fabric and this is not it. I returned it and I am buying a 12 count monks cloth.Got this for my mom, who makes Swedish Embroidery afghans with it. She wanted the off-white but had to settle for the white. But she's happy with it.I returned it because it is not what I needed, it is a fine product but not the monks cloth for rug punching.I received the product before the due date. Really pleased with the monk's cloth which I am using for Swedish weaving. It is advisable to machine stitch down each side of the non selvedge edge about 1 inch in and they fray. Then machine wash and tumble dry. This is because the fabric shrink alot. It's really lovely cloth to work with.Strong fabric that doesn't tear if you have to pull out and redo. I use it for punch needle work with 2 strands of DK wool. Wish you also stocked a higher count monks cloth that I could use with a single strand of DKNeed to be careful once you begin cutting as it trays very quick. Use a Zigzag stitch on the raw edges and you'll be fine.Supprised at the quality of the material compared to the more expense cloth's, it was definately value for the moneyI am very leased with this product, it is exactly as described. However I was not happy with having the product arrive cod after I had paid shipping when I ordered it.
